Elden Dale Cardwell, 83, of DeSoto, Texas and formerly of Wilmot, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 in Mansfield, Texas.

A memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Wilmot Lutheran Church, Wilmot, SD with the Rev. Sheila Pohl officiating. Committal of ashes will be in the Wilmot Cemetery at a later date.

Elden Dale Cardwell was born September 10, 1927 to Albert and Ethel (Fitz) Cardwell at Wilmot, SD. He grew up in the Wilmot area and he attended country school. He worked as a carpenter with his father for several years. He also worked for many farmers in the area and also at the Texaco station. He served in army until his father needed him on the farm, then served five years in the reserves.

On January 16, 1953, he was united in marriage to Leah Ellsworth at the Wilmot Lutheran Church. They made their home at Richfield, MN for 28 years where he worked for Hormel Foods. The couple had one son, Steven in 1955. Elden was baptized and confirmed at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. He was a member of the Richfield American Legion for many years and the past six years in the Milbank American Legion. In 1992, he retired and moved to DeSoto, Texas.

He loved working on race cars, gardening, flowers, working in the yard and helping others but most of all he loved attending his grandchildren's sports events and spending time with family and friends.

Elden Cardwell was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother (Jane Palmer-Cardwell), one brother, and two sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife Leah; son Steven (Karen) Cardwell of Cedar Hill, TX, two grandsons, Andrew (Tia) Cardwell of Laurel, MS, Anthony Cardwell of Dallas; three brothers, Delmer (Betty) Cardwell of Milbank, Larry Cardwell of Beardsley, MN and Gary (Pat) Cardwell of Clinton, MN, a brother-in-law, Lloyd (and friend Dorthea) Gath; two sisters, Fay (and friend Jim) Webster of Clinton, MN, Shirley (Carmen) Steen Sisseton, SD; sister-in-laws: Natalie (Oren) Strom of Centennial, CO, Muriel Ames of Richfield, MN and Geraldine (Lloyd) La Fountaine of Inver Grove Heights, MN and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Elden also had five step-brothers, Don (Mary) Palmer of Greenwood, WI, Hazen (Marlys) Palmer of Cambridge, MN, Chester (Lucy) Palmer of Rice, MN, Dean (Carol) Palmer of Barnsville, MN, Darryll (Beth) Palmer of Brooklyn Park, MN; step-sisters Arlys (John) Brown of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Eva Lou Stickland, Watertown, SD, Patricia (Gary) Cardwell of Clinton, MN, Sandra (& friend Dick) Arndt of Big Stone City, SD.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service time at the church. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be sent to Diabetes or Cancer research or your choice. His family is in charge of the arrangements.
