Nancy Matthews was the oldest child of a very large family that lived near Lilburn, Gwinnett Co., GA. Her father, Thomas Matthews, a pioneer settler of Gwinnett Co., was married twice and had a total of seventeen children. Nancy's mother was his first wife, who was also his cousin-once-removed, Julia Ather Matthews.


Nancy married William Akers of DeKalb Co. as his second wife on March 29, 1846. His first wife was her cousin-once-removed, Eleanor Matthews, but she had died fairly young. Nancy was then stepmother to Eleanor's son John H., until he went off to war and died in the Second Battle of Manassas.


William and Nancy had the following children: William Thomas Akers, who was married three times, to Laura B. Nichols, Mary White, and Carrie McAllister; George Washington Akers who married first Ella Shepherd, second Annie E. Mattison; James K. Polk Akers, who married Margaret Dean; Dr. Franklin Pierce Polk Akers, who married Camilla Dillian; Sarah Julia Ather Akers, who married Julius A. Carroll; and Charles Cicero Akers, who died young.

An Estimable Lady Dies at an Advanced Age - Funeral Will Occur at Sylvester


The death of Mrs. Nancy Akers occurred yesterday about noon after a short illness. Mrs. Akers was seventy-eight years of age, and her death is attributed to old age.


Mrs. Akers was a resident of Atlanta for many years. She was the mother of G. W. Akers, W. T. Akers, J. K. P. Akers, T. P. H. Akers and Mrs. Julia A. Carroll.


The funeral services will be held at Sylvester church at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon. The funeral cortege will leave the residence, 39 Spruce street, at 3:30 o'clock."

AKERS--Friends of Mrs. Nancy Akers, W. T. Akers, G. W. Akers, J. K. P. Akers. T. P. H. Akers and Mrs. Julia A. Carroll are invited to attend the funeral of the former from Sylvester church this (Saturday) afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The cortege will leave the residence, 39 Spruce street, Inman Park, at 3:30 o'clock. Her grandsons will act as pallbearers.
