The son of William D. Akers & his first wife Eleanor Matthews (died young), he was raised by his step-mother Nancy Matthews (his mother's first cousin). He enlisted in the infantry of the C.S.A. at Decatur, Georgia. He was killed at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run at age 18 and was buried on the battlefield with thousands of other Confederate and Union soldiers.
