Born 6 Aug 1870, probably in Missouri, but possibly in Arkansas. Parents were Thomas Madison Claxton (1845-1897) & Laura (Reed) Claxton (1845-1874), who were married about 1867 in Arkansas. Jennie had one brother, James Thomas Claxton (10 Sept 1873 - 1 June 1956). Land records prove that Thomas & Laura Claxton were in Fulton County, Arkansas on 20 Jan 1873.

Jennie’s mother, Laura (Reed) Claxton, dies after Sept 1873 but before 24 June 1879, when husband Thomas remarries. Jennie is about 4 years old and goes to live permanently with her grandparents Hirum M Claxton (1817-1890) {#11057013} and Temperance (Mathis) Claxton (1818-1898) {#11057108} for the rest of her childhood. Her brother James, 1 year old, goes to live permanently with an uncle, Frances “Frank” Marion Claxton (1838-1918) and his family in Missouri.

Jennie’s father, Thomas Madison Claxton (1845-1897) marries again on 24 June 1879 to Rebecca Ophelia Shaw (1862-1948). They had four children.

On the 1880 census, dated 11 June, Jennie is living with her grandparents in South Fork Township, Howell County, Missouri. Head-of-house is Hirum Claxton 63y, his wife Temperance 62y, their children Benjamin J 22y, Minerva 20y, Andrew J 19y & granddaughter "ginnie" 9yr.

On 9 March 1890, when Jennie was 20y, her grandfather Hirum M Claxton (1817-1890) dies.
About 1890, probably in Missouri, Jennie marries William Williams, the exact date and location are unknown. They have one daughter, Ethel Eldora Williams (1891-1959), born in Missouri. {Note that Ethel’s 1916 marriage certificate clearly states that Wm Williams is her father and Jennie Claxton is her mother}. Very little information is found about William Williams, so it is a guess that he dies around 1891.

On 10 Jan 1893, in Howell County, Missouri, Jennie L Claxton marries John Anderson Whitson. Their union produces two children, Myrtle Jennie Whitson (1895-1969) and Frank Whitson (1896-1969). {Frank later takes the last name Thrasher for his adult lifetime.}

10 April 1899, Jennie L Whitson, 28yr, divorces John Whitson, 32yr, stating that 'he has been guilty of open, notorious adultery and abandoned her without any means of support', and mentions Myrtle 4yr & Frank 3yr.

The 1900 census, dated June 1st, lists Jennie Claxton as divorced, 29ys & living with 4yr old daughter Myrtle, rents the home, & works as a “washer woman”. They are in West Plains, Howell County, Missouri. The census says she has three living children, (Ethel, Myrtle and Frank). {{By 1900, Jennie’s first daughter Ethel is 9yr, but I cannot find her yet on any census records. Also in 1900, Jennie’s son Frank is permanently living with Lucius B Thrasher (1848-1925) & second wife Nancy (Hammond) Thrasher (1857-?), in Washington Township, Fulton County, Arkansas.}}

On 5 March 1909, in Howell County, Missouri, Mrs Jennie Whitson, 38yr, marries James C Haywood, 62yr, (1847-1910). No other documentation yet found on this marriage or to explain what happens to James Haywood. It’s a guess that he dies before April 1910.

The 1910 Census, dated 21 April, indicates that Jennie Whitson is a widow, living in a rented house on South Street, West Plains, Howell County, Missouri, along with her daughters, Ethel Williams 19yr, and Myrtle Whitson 14yr. Jennie and Ethel are listed as “washer woman”.

24 Feb 1916, Mrs Jennie Haywood, 45yr, married Edley W Maxwell, 72yr, in the city of West Plains, Howell County, Missouri. They possibly divorce (?), since Jennie is living in California by Jan 1920, and Edley dies on March 10, 1920, in Missouri.

The 1920 Census, dated 22 Jan, indicates that Jennie Maxwell, a widow, is living with her daughter Ethel (Williams) Martin and her husband Clifford Martin (1888-1958), in Castoria Township, San Joaquin County, California. Immediately next door to their residence, lives Jennie’s other daughter, Myrtle (Whitson) Martin and her husband Roscoe Harold “Harry” Martin (1895-1974). {Clifford and Harry Martin were cousins}.

1922 California voter registration documents shows Mrs Jennie Whitson, living at 215 N Lincoln Park Ave, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, CA. She declined to state her political party.

1924 California voter registration show her as Mrs Jennie Whitson, homemaker, living at 215 North Lincoln Park Ave, Los Angeles, CA, precinct 891, she is listed as a republican.

1930 Census, dated 16 April, Jennie Maxwell, 59yr, widow, living with daughter Ethel (Williams) Martin, 40yr, & husband Clifford Martin 42yr, in French Camp, Castoria Township, San Joaquin County, CA.

The 1940 Census, dated 20 April, living in Sheltered Oaks, O’Neal Judicial Township, San Joaquin County, CA, indicates that Jennie Maxwell, 69yr, owns the house on North Central Avenue, value $1,200.00, widow, born in MO, completed 4th grade, does not work & has “other income”.

Death: 6 May 1953, Stockton, San Joaquin County, California. Jennie L Maxwell, 57yr. Her death certificate is typed and clearly states that her father’s name was Thomas Claxton, and her mother’s name was Laura Reed. Death certificate states that she is buried in the Park View Cemetery, (which is also known as the French Camp Cemetery), located SE of Stockton, CA. Person providing information on the certificate was her oldest daughter, Ethel (Williams) Martin.
