O'Lena Jones Perkins

O'Lena Jones Perkins slipped her earthly bonds Monday, May 15, 2017, in Houston, TX.

Born August 15, 1936, in Corrigan, Texas, she graduated from Corrigan-Camden High School and attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, where she majored in Home Economics and minored in Art.

On one of O'Lena's bus trips from Corrigan back to SFA in Nacogdoches, she set next to a handsome U. S. Marine, as there were no other seats on the bus. She soon learned he was a Drill Instructor in San Diego and was on leave visiting his family in Nacogdoches. This short bus trip led to a wedding two weeks later, July 31, 1956, to Sergeant Allen Ray Perkins. The two returned to San Diego to begin their married life. In 1957, Allen was honorably discharged and they returned to Texas, settling down in Texas City, where Allen found work at the Union Carbide Corporation.

Two children would follow in the next couple of years, Mary Alena and Mark Allen. When her kids were in school, O'Lena began substitute teaching in Texas City. Many teachers would request O'Lena to substitute for them knowing she had the ability to control any classroom, no matter how high spirited the children were. After several months of substituting, the students came to know that she was strict but fair and expected good behavior and hard work. Thus, she earned the nickname "Sergeant Perkins" which she proudly acknowledged for 35 years.

O'Lena often reflected on how proud she was that both of her children earned Bachelor's Degrees and had fulfilling lives. She was especially proud of Mark for joining the US Army and serving for 12 years, before he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class (18E).

After O'Lena and Allen retired, they moved to Pearland to be closer to the ones they loved the most, their Son, his wife and their grandchildren.

To keep busy, O'Lena poured her heart and soul into the study of their family's genealogy and the cataloging of grave sites at many of the smaller cemeteries in the South. A good time for O'Lena was a day trip to Clayton Genealogical Library, or a weeklong trip to the Carolinas for research. She was an active member of "The George Washington Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution", the "Fort Virginia Point Chapter of The United Daughters of the Confederacy", the "Francis Fleshhart Chapter of the United States Daughter of 1812", the "Texas City Ancestry Searchers", and the "Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International".

O'Lena's greatest lost was her daughter to Breast Cancer in April of 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ode Knight and Mary Jones Knight, her sister Mary Arlene Bazzoon and brother-in-law Drafton Bazzoon.

O'Lena is survived by her husband Allen, son Mark, daughter -in-law Karen, granddaughters Rebecca and Shelby Perkins , niece Carolyn Spell, cousin Jody Spell and his wife Holley.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to "The George Washington Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution", 1023 Woodbank Dr, Seabrook, TX 77586-4012.

Services will be held 11:00am on Friday, May 19th at the Union Springs Cemetery Pavilion in Corrigan, Texas.
