Very little is known about my 3rd great grandmother, Ellen. One thing that is known is that she was the second wife of Joseph Hollenbeck Sr. marrying between 1847 and 1848, most likely in Crawford County Pennsylvania. Family lore is that she was a 16 year old Southern Belle. Her origin as well as her ending is sketchy at best. Her maiden name was known only as "Riggs" from her daughter Rachel Hollenbeck Fairbanks' death certificate.

Ancestry DNA Thrulines show that she wasn't a Riggs by birth and that her parents were actually Mary Polly Howard (1807-1850) and Sebern M. Jones (fag #57032844) (1800-1867).

Mary, the daughter of Baldwin Howard (fag #43214638) and Sebern, either the son of William Wiley Jones (1760-1839) or Joshua Jones (fag #27230040) (1771-1842).

Corrections encouraged.

Ellen's birth place & birth year vary greatly according to the recorded US Census.

1850 Census says Ellen was born in Tennessee (16 - 1834)

1860 Census says Ellen was born in Tennessee (28 - 1832)

1870 Census says Ellen was born in Pennsylvania (50 - 1820)

1880 Census says Ellen was born in Louisiana (65 - 1815)

1880 U.S. Census dated: 26th June for Wayne Township, Crawford County, Pa.

Ellen was living with Sophia Everett and her husband, William. Ellen is listed as mother-in-law. Sophia & William's son, Thomas Rudolph Everett died in California in 1948. The California Death index lists his mother's maiden name as: Herendon. Is it possible that Ellen was married prior to her marriage to Joseph Hollenbeck, after his first wife Eunice died in 1846. Joseph died in 1876, four years prior to this census. Or was the "mother-in-law" entry on the 1880 census a mistake, or could she have been step mother to Sophia?

After the 1880 census, several families from Wayne Township moved west to Nebraska. Including William and Sophia Everett and Warren and Rachel Fairbanks. Rachel was the second youngest child of Joseph and Ellen Hollenbeck. Since Joseph died in 1876, it's possible that Ellen went west as well, dying in Nebraska or anywhere in between. The Everett and Fairbanks families were living in Verona Township, Adams County, Nebraska in 1885.

Ellen's where abouts are unknown after the 1880 census.
