John D. Howe
November 6, 1921 - May 13, 2017

Dr. John D. Howe, D.V.M. passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017. John was born to hard working parents on a farm in Daniels Creek, Wasatch Co. Utah. He learned to work hard while very young and had been at it ever since.
He was born on November 6, 1921 to Leonard Jackson Howe and Mary Bell Theodora Taylor Howe.
John’s family earned their livelihood through farming, raising livestock, and some fruit-mostly apples. He had two older sisters: LaVon and LuDeen; an older brother, Roland, a younger brother, Arnold, one other brother, Taylor, who died as an infant.
His family lived through the Depression but due to the industriousness of his parents, they were never hungry or without clean clothes. Due to his upbringing, John was always very thrifty and frugal. He knew how to make a buck and would take every opportunity to do so.
John attended high school and seminary in Heber City, Utah. After high school he worked the family farm for a couple of years while his father worked in the defense plant and his older brother was drafted. All three boys were in the war at the same time.
In 1942 he went to Logan to study Aircraft Maintenance, thinking it would be a good idea with the war and all. In the spring of 1943 he was drafted, was sent to radio school, and then onto gunnery school. He loved shooting! From there to Marvek Air Base for phase training where they were put together as a crew assigned to a B24 Bomber. He served in World War II as a bombardier in the 98th Bombardment Squad Bomber Crew in the South Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
John went back to school at Utah State. He received a B.S. Degree in Animal Husbandry and then in 1952 went to Ithaca, New York to Veterinary School. While at Utah State he met Maxine Lowry of Manti, Utah, a previous Miss Manti. He was always surprised she would go with a lowly farmer, but she did. They were married on April 25, 1952 in the Manti Utah LDS Temple.
John and Maxine went east to school that same fall where they spent four years in schooling and an additional year working the ambulatory clinic. While living in New York, Craig J. and Diane were born. While John went to school, Maxine watched children and did lab work for the school to help pay for schooling.
They then moved to Santa Maria, California, where John practiced large and small animal Veterinary Medicine for 45 years. Linda Lea, Margo Lynn and Scott Randall were all born in Santa Maria. Five kids would complete their family.
John loved animals and the family always had some around, all kinds! He was well known in Santa Barbara County for his great work ethic. He was a very caring, honest, compassionate man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was always joking around and had a great story to tell. He had so many wonderful qualities and was admired by so many people.
John was an active and stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many leadership positions in the church. He served for several years after retiring in the baptistery in the St. George Temple as an ordinance worker. He loved working with other members his age in the temple and made lots of friends there.
John had a very strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which he loved. He gave thanks always for its guidance and direction for our lives and gives credit to living its principles to being very blessed in his life.
He is survived by family members for whom he has set such a wonderful example and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by: Craig J. (Elizabeth) Howe, Diane (Stanley) Maggard, Linda Lea (Gordon Bradford) Lyle, Margo Lynn (Brian) Gunderson, and Scott Randall; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A family graveside service will be held, Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Manti City Cemetery.
