Mrs. Joe Cabeen, formerly Bertha Jennette Smith, beloved and respected by all who knew her for her kindness of heart and sweet womanly character, answered the summons of death Sunday morning, June 4, at 7 o'clock at her home on East Fourth street in Aledo, aged 4 years, 10 months and 19 days. Death came following a stroke suffered Friday morning, and marked the termination of four years of pain and suffering which were borne with a courage and patience noble and inspiring.

Bertha Jeannette Smith was born July 15, 1876 in Aledo, the daughter of the late James M. and Mary Boone Smith. She was one of a family of eight children, two dying in infancy. She grew to womanhood and spent practically her entire life in this community, where she became widely known. On Jan. 2, 1918, she was united in marriage to Joseph Cabeen of this city, the ceremony taking place at Rochester, Minn.

Those left to mourn her passing besides the widower, Joseph Cabeen, are two sisters, Mrs. E. E. Bowers of Rochester, Minn., and Miss Emma F. Smith of Aledo, and three brothers, A. L. Smith of Rochester, Minn., W. B. Smith of aurora, Ill., and James A. Smith of Peoria.

Thoughtfullness and consideration for others marked the life and deeds of Mrs. Cabeen. Her cheerful fortitude in the face of pain and suffering, and her warm hearted, neighborly disposition held the admiration and esteem of all.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, June 6, at 2:00 p. m. from the home, Dr. Samuel Van Pelt, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Interment was in the Aledo cemetery. - Aledo Democrat.
