John Amis was shot in the home of Robert Julius Bob Baker which acted as the first court for early Clay County KY. He was testifying in the famed "Cattle Wars" incident and was shot in the head and killed instantly by Joel Elkins.

Captain John Amis was in fact an officer in the Volunteer Soldier in the 1787-1811 campaign during the great Indian Removal, via the National Archives he enlisted a Srgt from Knoxville Tennessee.

Killed 2 mths aftere the he and his wife, Katie had filed a civil suit against, the Davidsons, Robin Cornett, William Strong and those in the Great Catlle Wars of Clay County in the home of Robert Julius Bob Baker where the first court was in Clay County Kentucky,, August of 1807
