Martha Macomb Flandrau was born in Kentucky to Charles and Isabella Flandrau on August 14, 1861. She married Tilden Russell Selmes. They had a daughter, Isabella, who would become Arizona's first congresswoman.

Her husband Tilden Russell Selmes became ill and after futile attempts to recover died at the Dinsmore family farm in Boone County, Kentucky in 1895.

Suffering from pleurisy Martha "Patty" Selmes died on July 7, 1923 at the Burro Mountain Homestead of her daughter Isabella Greenway. The homestead was in Grant County, New Mexico not too far away from Silver City.

Martha's remains were cremated and her ashes placed into her husband's gravesite at the family cemetery in Dinsmore, Kentucky.
