John Carl was born in Austria in 1828.

In 1874 he was in Hollandtown, Manitowoc county, Wisconsin where he married the widow Margaret Newmier (nee Wortzberger) and gained three children from her previous marriage: Katherine, Joseph, and Mary.

John and Maggie also had children of their own. They had two children while in Hollandtown: John in 1874 and Barbara in 1875/6. They removed to Unity in 1877, where they lived only a short time. Their son Frank was born there in 1877. They moved from Unity as soon as they were able to start their home in 1878, in section 36 of what would become Eau Pleine township.

Early histories of the Carl family note that the 20 mile journey from Unity to their new home required the creation of a primitive road as they went, through virgin forest and across innumerable waterways. Once settled, groceries were to be had for a trip to and ground flour could be purchased to the south, in McMillan.

In their Eau Pleine homestead, John and Maggie had at least three more children: Amelia, Charles, and Maggie, all who died young.

John Carl was instrumental in starting the Marathon Pride School. His sons remembered him walking to Wausau to assure that it would be built.

John Carl died in February of 1889 (some family histories say 1890).
