Dale Edwin Cates, the son of Byrhl and Garlene (Toomer) Cates, was born near Lake View, Iowa, on August 10, 1941. He lived his youth in the Lake View vicinity and received his education there, graduating from the Lake View High School. Following high school, he worked on farms near Lake City and Wall Lake, Iowa.

In December of 1962, Dale was united in marriage to Marilyn Byriel in Lytton, Iowa, and to this union two children were born: Bill and Amy. Dale was employed at the tile plant in Lake View for 21 years. Marilyn died in May of 1979. After Marilyn’s death, Dale moved to Storm Lake and was employed with IBP (Tyson) for the next 25 years. On November 13, 1982, Dale was united in marriage to Marilyn Luckow and they enjoyed 34 years together. Following his retirement from Tyson, he worked for the City of Storm Lake taking care of the city parks for 5 years.

While residing in Lake View, Dale was a volunteer fireman. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club in Storm Lake. Some of Dale’s favorite pastimes included refinishing furniture, raising rabbits, fishing and gardening.

Dale’s life will always be cherished and honored by his family which include his wife: Marilyn of Storm Lake, Iowa; children: Bill (Kay) Cates of Lake View, Iowa; Jeff (Judi) Peters of Harlingen, Texas; Julie Christiansen and her fiancée, Tony Ebel of Storm Lake, Iowa; Joelle (Pat) Ryherd of Newell, Iowa; and Jeanna (Vince) Krepps; grandchildren: Caitlin, Ashley and Noah Peters; Melissa Christiansen-Kloss (Eric) Kloss; Dan (Amber) Christiansen; Dillon and Dustin Ebel; Patrick (Emily) Ryherd, Levi (Morgan) Ryherd; Trevor, Tayla, Tyler, and Tristan Krepps; great grandchildren: Sawyer Kloss, Laiken and London Christiansen, and Emma Ryherd; brother, Ronald (Beth) Cates of Carroll, Iowa; two sisters: Jan (Jim) Truelson of Kalona, Iowa; Marilyn (Craig) Evans of Sioux City, Iowa; a niece, nephews, other extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn; daughter, Amy; and grandson, Nick Peters.
