James was an overseer in West Yorkshire, England. In 1824 he married Ann Broadbent, also from Honley, where they raised their five children.

William, Elliot and James immigrated to Ontario, Canada, while in 1861 their sister Selina married John William Taylor and remained in England.

After James' death in 1863, his widow Ann and their youngest son Abraham, 14, sailed aboard the Westminster in 1864 to join the rest of the family.
