Martha Eleanor Flint Schullery ended her 101 years of life on earth April 23, 2017 at Piedmont Crossing in
Thomasville, NC, traveling on as prayer surrounded her and loving hands held her close. In her final days, she faced her death with the same strength and gentle tenacity with which she had lived her life.
Loved in her devoted role of wife, mother and grandmother, Martha took up space in this world in ways that warmed the hearts of others and defied convention. A student of life and people, her curiosity and brilliant, eccentric musings were a distinctive part of what made her who she was. Martha held the ability to speak the truth as she saw it with charm and wit. She was grateful and gracious, loving, yet feisty, possessing a humor and joy for people that drew love around her. An eternal optimist, Martha saw the world with brightness and an uncanny ability to understand the human condition in a way that comforted and mentored many.
Martha was born on September 6, 1915 in Amenia, NY to Gilbert and Wilhelmina Werder Flint. Martha grew up on a large New England dairy farm that had been in her family since the American Revolution. She attended Virginia Intermont College, which was excellent in speech and dramatics. At Pratt Institute in New York City, she majored in Dietetics and worked at St. Giles Children’s Hospital.
On April 19, 1942, she wed Robert J. Schullery and learned to both live in and love the South, telling the story of doing her ironing with her back to the window-only to realize one half of her dress had become sun-faded! Her skills with people were not her only strength. She made the best apple pies and charmed wild chameleons on her fingertips. Bees would land on her fingers as she sat in church as a girl. She was known for fitting ponies into cars to safely transport them and allowing pet birds to leave trails in the butter at the dinner table. Martha was an avid equestrian, having learned to ride on farm draft horses with an old Civil War saddle. She drove a horse and buggy to school.
A student of faith and an unabashed questioner of most doctrines, Martha was unafraid to discuss her ideas with any person of the cloth in an earnest and intellectual attempt to expand her understanding of the truth. A fervent believer that there are “many paths to the mountaintop,” she lived her life seeing each person as a Child of God.
Her beloved two children, daughter Louise Marie Cox (David Vania), son John Flint (Rosemary Royce)Schullery survive Martha. She is also survived by grandson Olan (LiaMari) Cox and their children Malukai and Eva Cox of CA; granddaughter Heather (Ibrahim) Kamia and their children, Yeleen Martha and Kahnu of MN; grandsons Kyle of the Phillipines, and Brett Schullery of NC.
Her grandson, Patrick Flint Schullery, sister, Catherine Leigh, and brother, Gilbert Hall Flint, preceded her in death.
Upon selling their home in the Outer Banks where they had retired, Martha and her Robert (who died July 14, 2010) had been residents of Piedmont Crossing since 1999. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Piedmont Crossing for their loving care over the years.
She leaves her legacy of love and her joy of living to all who knew and loved her. A family service will be held in New York State at a later date where she and Robert will be laid to rest at her family church.
In lieu of flowers, her family feels that the best way to honor Martha’s life is to do what she loved: be kind to each other, question what you know with gentle curiosity, make time to laugh, take a walk with a loved one, cook something delicious and nourishing or simply be lovingly present for those around you. Martha would be most happy when a kindness is shared into the world around you.
Any gestures of condolences can also be made as donations in her name to two causes dear to her heart: 1) NCLBPH (Friends of the North Carolina Library for the Blind) 1811 Capital Blvd, Raleigh, NC 27635 OR visit http://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/lbph/outreach/donations. 2) Pratt Institute, Office of Alumni and Annual Giving, Attn: Annual fund, ISC-LL 003, Brooklyn, NY 11205 or visit https://www.pratt.edu/pratt-giving/ways-to-give/.
