During the Civil War, she was freed when the Union Army came through her master's lands while campaigning near Corinth, Mississippi. She was brought to Ohio in 1862 to aid Colonel A. W. Gilbert. Gilbert was injured during a battle near there and after a visit from his wife, planned to return to his home in Ohio with Rachel acting as a personal nurse. Only 14 years old, she returned with him and his wife to Elland, the Richards-Gilbert Family Estate near Cincinnati, Ohio. Rachel lived with them as a free woman for the rest of her life. She was treated kindly by the Gilberts and was educated. Her last name is undocumented.
