Co. F, 26th Ill. Infantry

No dates on his stone. The cemetery listing shows that John B. Thomas died July 7, 1880; however, he was in the 1880 census, and family trees on Ancestry.com show different dates and places for his death. Due to this being a common name, he is easily confused with other men by the same name.

Some family trees show that John's middle name was Butler.

According to family trees on Ancestry.com, this John B. Thomas who lived in Kirksville, Missouri in 1880, was born in 1843 in Illinois, the son of Charles Thomas (1810-1867) and Elizabeth (Carter) (1811-1889). These trees show John's wife's name was Sarah Smothers or Patterson and they had 7 known children (the ones listed in the 1880 census). However, there is a record in Tazewell County, Illinois of a marriage on August 16, 1866 of a John B. Thomas to Sarah Norris. This seems to be the correct marriage date for the the couple in the above 1870 and 1880 census records.

This may or may not be the correct John B. Thomas who is buried in this grave. There is also a Sarah Thomas buried in this cemetery without a marker who is probably his wife and whom we have linked to John. The Infant Thomas buried in this cemetery who died in 1881 is shown on the cemetery record as the son of John B. Thomas.

There is also a Frank M. Thomas (1869-1920) buried beside John B. Thomas. This is probably John's son Francis Thomas who was 11 years old in the 1880 census.
