She attended Madison High School in Rexburg and attended several classes taught by her father, who taught math and science there. She participated in drama and cheerleading. During her senior year, World War II broke out. After graduating, she took employment as a stenographer at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was while living in Logan, that Miss Nelson met and dated Tarrell G. Hatch, a young man running the family farm in Paradise, Utah. They were married March 27, 1946, in the Idaho Falls Idaho LDS Temple in the first year the temple was open. The couple lived in Paradise, Utah, for two years before moving to a beautiful farm northeast of Idaho Falls, where she resided the rest of her life. The couple recently celebrated 71 years of marriage.

Zona raised five sons and two daughters. Zona was active in politics and served as precinct and state committee woman for the Idaho Republican Party. In 1969, she visited Washington, D.C., with a delegation of Republican women from Idaho. Zona was office manager for Hatch Supply, a company she and Tarrell owned together.

Zona served at the Idaho Falls Genealogy Library as a genealogist and family history instructor. She served as a temple worker, Relief Society teacher, Young Women's president, and Sunday school teacher, among other callings. Zona and her husband, Tarrell, served two missions to Texas for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They traveled to the Holy Land in 2007 for the opportunity to visit the historic and holy sites. Zona's hobbies included ice skating, skiing, dancing, reading, writing family newsletters, genealogy, cooking, sewing, music, planning parties and scripture study.

Zona is survived by her husband, Tarrell Hatch; their children, Selby (Cynthia), Deilia (Robert) Purcell, Barlow (Debbie), Alban (Sherri), Cordell (Jan), Sherma (Mark) Becktel and Bradford (Julie); 40 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren.
