Sherwin Clive is a son of Sterling G Nelson and Rose Leah Young. He has five older siblings: a stillborn brother, Sterling LaRelle, Vincent Young, Zona Elaine, and Faunda Ree.
Clive married Carol Allred on December 20, 1951 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They became parents to three daughters: Sherisse, Natalei, and Venetta. Carol died in 1958.
After Carol's death Clive moved the family to California where he completed a doctorate in neurochemistry at Stanford University. He worked in research until he moved back to Idaho and became employed at Idaho State University until retirement.
