US Congressman. He studied both medicine and law before becoming an attorney in Indiana. In 1844 he moved to Alabama, and in 1848 he relocated to Brooklyn, New York. He continued to practice law and became involved in local politics and government. In 1856 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served one term, 1857 to 1859. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1858 and settled in Washington, where he practiced law until his death.
