Anne Beutel was born in Bennett Valley, (part of Santa Rosa) to Gottlieb Beutel and Anna (Spieth) Beutel, immigrants from Esslingen, Germany. She had one sister, Marie.
She was raised on the family vineyard where they grew grapes and made wine. The 40 acre ranch was on the land that is now the corner of Bennett Valley Road, and Bethards Drive in Santa Rosa. The old house where she was born, is still there, as of 2009. She graduated from UC San Francisco school of nursing and became a registered nurse. She was working as a nurse in a clinic on Oahu, Hawaii, when she met her future husband, Bill Sawyer of San Rafael, CA.
They returned to California, got married and had a son Wilbur A. Sawyer Jr., and daughter, Caroline Mae Sawyer. They lived for a time on Bosley Street in Santa Rosa, and then purchased a 3 acre prune ranch on Melita Road, also in Santa Rosa, around 1937. It was there that she would spend her life taking care of the children, and doing what a wife did in those days. She was active in the Rincon Valley Grange, and the Womens Club. She also did the books for the newsstand they owned downtown, Sawyer's News. She also loved her garden and greenhouse, and in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, they grew daffodils, statice, and other plants to sell in the store.
Anne was my grandmother. She was reserved, and rather quiet, but very loving. She loved picknicks in Bennett Valley, and showing us wild flowers that she picked as a child. She talked about hiking up on Bennett Peak, and going to the one room school house, next to the cemetery. She also spoke of riding a horse into town to attend high school. She really cared about Santa Rosa, and read the newspaper every day, staying up on current events. She was a very special, loving, mother and grandmother, and we miss her.
