Col James William Lomax was born in Abbeville County on Oct 19, 1816 and died in 1888 in Lowndesville. He married 1st____Lynch. They had no children. He married 2nd Mary Calhoun, grandniece of John C Calhoun. Their children: John Calhoun, Mary E, Kate McGregor, Jennie and Maud Lomax.

Col James William Lomax was one of the largest planters in his section of Abbeville County before the War Between the States. He was elected to the State Legislature from Abbeville County despite the fact that he was known to have opposed “Secession.” When war was declared, he took a leading part in raising a company for Confederate service and was offered the captaincy of the company but declined because of his age. He agreed to accept the place of first lieutenant and served as such through the war. He lost the greater part of his estate by the war. He was said to have saved one large plantation and, in 1888, there were fifty of his former slaves still living with him on this place.
