Enlisted, October 28, 1910, in Troop 1, Squadron A, NYNG, in New York City. On December 6, 1911 the Squadron was reviewed at the Armory by Henry L Stimson ( former member of Squadron A ), Secretary of War. May 25 - 26, 1912 while training at Van Cortland Park Troops A, E, and G were visited by President William H Taft and Major General O'Ryan. He was discharged from Squadron A in 1913.

He served in Troop 1 with his brother William Howard Taft II

World War 1, appointed Captain, Ordinance, November 30, 1917. On leave of absence to attend Field Artillery Officers Training Course, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Field Artillery, October 2, 1918 ( automatically cancelled Captaincy in the Ordinance Corps ). Assigned to the staff of the Field Artillery Corps officers Training School, Camp Taylor. Promoted 1st Lieutenant, October 14, 1918. Discharged, December 18, 1918.
