Enlisted, October 21, 1910, in Troop 1, Squadron A, New York City. Mustered in for service on the Mexican border, with Troop A, Squadron A Cavalry, June 30, 1916. Squadron A Cavalry was stationed at Camp McAllen with the New York Division. Squadron A Cavalry returned to New York on December 23, 1916 and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916.

His brother Walbridge Smith Taft served in Troop 1, Squadron A with him, 1910 -13.

World War 1, commissioned, 1st Lieutenant, Ordinance, September 22, 1917 and assigned to Watervliet Arsenal, NY. Transferred as a 1st Lieutenant, Field Artillery, to Headquarters, 65th Field Artillery Brigade, 39th Division, Camp Beauregard, LA. He served as the aide to BG Ira A Haynes and brigade intelligence officer ( S- 2 ). Deployed to Europe with the 65th FA Brigade, August 26, 1918. Served in France and returned to the States early April 1919. Discharged from the service April 18, 1919.

Post War, Served as 1st Lieutenant, Cavalry, Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. June 1, 1921, Troop B was redesignated, Troop B, 51st Machine Gun Squadron. Discharged December 7, 1922.
