"J.W. Hargrave, one of the old citizens of Kaw, who went to the National Military home at Leavenworth a few weeks ago to make his home, died there March 17 of cerebral hemorrhage. His daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Weeks went to Leavenworth and accompanied the body home for burial at Greenwood Cemetery, beside his wife, whose death preceded his less than four weeks. Funeral services were held in Kaw Valley M.E. Church March 19, conducted by Rev. J.W. Mosslander. Mrs. Chas. Weeks and family were the only kin who could be present. J.W. Hargrave was born at Crawfordville, Ind. Aug. 11, 1843. April 7, 1869, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Erskine in Vanderburgh County, Ind. To this union were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. The five surviving are Richard of Jacksonville, Fla.; Wm. of Rifle, Col.; Albion F. of Western Springs, Ill.; Mary Erskine of 80 St. James Place, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Chas. E. Weeks, Belvue, Kan. At the age of 19, J.W. Hargrave enlisted in 72 Ind. Vol. Infantry in which he served his country until the close of war. After marriage he lived near Rensellaer, Ind., until winter of 80-81 when he moved to Wabaunsee County, Kan. where with the exception of four years, he spent the remainder of his life. Chas. Weeks family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to those friends who have so kindly helped them in their recent trouble of sickness and death."
