David Wayne Green, 98, of Alta, Wyoming, died March 31, 2017, in Fillmore, Utah of causes incident to age.
He was born March 12, 1919, on the Aspen Leaf Ranch in Alta, to George Bernard and Amelia Dalley Green. He attended school in the Teton Valley and graduated from Teton High School. After high school he attended college at the University of Idaho, South Branch, in Pocatello.
He joined the US Army in 1939, and was assigned to the 18th Field Artillery Group, 7th Corps, First United States Army. He was sent to the European Theater of Operations. The group landed D-Day + 5. This was the first group ashore in Normandy and they were the first to cross the Rhine. He was a Captain and was decorated with an Air Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster.
After returning from the service he met Lois Child at stake conference. They were married on June 10, 1947, in the Salt Lake Temple. Lois was a dedicated, loving, and loyal wife for just short of 60 years, prior to her passing away in February of 2007.
Wayne assumed operation of Aspen Leaf Ranch from his father after returning from the service. It was home to his herd of sheep for many decades. He supported the herd with hay and grain and in the early years he raised potatoes and sweet peas.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His greatest pride and joy was his family. He and Lois had the great honor of being the parents of ten children: Rosemary (Charles) Burns of Idaho Falls, Susan (Val) Kunz of Victor, Kerry (Susan) Green of St. George, Utah, Jil (Rod) Gust of Alta, Rebecca Green Shank of Ventura, California, Brian (Janel) Green of Rexburg, Katie (Andy Abalos) Green of Maui, Bret Green (deceased), Bruce (Samera) Green of Rigby, Burke (Brandi) Green of Layton, Utah. The couple also have 27 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
In their retirement years, Wayne and Lois began spending their winters in St. George. With almost as many family members there as in the Teton Valley, they had a wonderful time visiting there. He so enjoyed spending time in St. George with Kerry and his family.
At the time of his death on March 31, Wayne was traveling back “north” from St. George with the hope that Spring was arriving in Teton Valley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, at the Driggs LDS Stake Center. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., both times at the stake center. Interment will be in the Alta Cemetery under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to purchase and plant trees in memory of Wayne. Donations can be sent to: 420 Greenville Rd., Alta, WY, 83414
