Daughter of Daniel Clayton and Betty Thrift

Married Joseph Albiston, 19 July 1846, Oldham, Lancastershire, England. He left his wife and children and emigrated by himself to Utah in 1879. They had six children: John, James, William Joseph, Ann, and Thomas.

Married William Goodwin Noble, 22 April 1887, Logan, Cache, Utah

History. Mary Ann Clayton Albiston was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by James Briggs on April 7, 1883, at the Oldham Branch in Lancashire, England. She was confirmed at the same place by John R. Holt the next day. Later she was rebaptized at the Logan Temple on October 5, 1888, and was endowed there also on October 24, 1888. Mary Ann said at the time of her baptism that she was born January 3, 1826, at "Mawsley," in Cheshire. The recorder at this time must not have known the correct spelling, or Mary Ann didn't, but it is spelled Mossley.

Her first husband was Joseph Albiston. He was born August 29, 1820, in Stockport Parish, Cheshire, England, the son of Patriarch John Albiston and Hannah Thacker. Joseph and Mary Ann were married July 19, 1846, at Oldham, Lancashire, but the marriage did not endure. They were apparently not together after about 1860, and Joseph came to America without his family in 1879.

Mary Ann did not come to America until she was 57 years old, shortly after she was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With her sons Thomas and Joseph, she came on the Steamship Nevada, which left England on August 29, 1883. Their agent was John Henry Smith. Mary Ann's ticket was 15 pounds 5 pence, while her sons paid 17 pounds 6 shillings 5 pence apiece. Those values would equal about 2000 and 2200 in 2022 U.S. dollars. On the ship were 270 British, including 5 Church Elders who paid their fare; 107 Swiss and German; 2,286 Scandinavian; and 23 returning Elders. making a total of 886 persons on board.

Mary Ann settled in Smithfield, in Cache County, Utah, and she married again on April 22, 1887. She lived with her husband William Goodwin Noble for six years until his death in 1893. Mary Ann passed away in Smithfield, Utah in 1899. --based on the work of Craig Albiston, reported in 1976.
