BANCROFT - Rachel Barfuss McLain, 92, of Bancroft, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at the Caribou Memorial Hospital in Soda Springs. She was born Dec. 1, 1910, in Bancroft, the daughter of Frederick and Wilhelmina Leonhardt Barfuss. She married Lewis S. McLain Oct. 9, 1929, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mr. McLain passed away Feb. 1, 1988.

Rachel was raised and educated in the Lund and Bancroft areas, attending Bancroft schools. She was a member of the Bancroft LDS First Ward and had served as a visiting teacher, Sunday school secretary, president and counselor in the MIA, Relief Society work director and as a teacher in all organizations.

Rachel had been a 4-H leader for 10 years; she served on the 4-H Council for nine years; she received the "Friend of 4-H Award." She was the grand Marshall of the Caribou County Fair in 2000.

Her hobbies include gardening, quilting, farming along with her husband and family reunions. She loved the 24th of July celebrations in Bancroft and she especially enjoyed Christmas with her family.

Rachel is survived by two sons and four daughters and their spouses: Evan and Vickie McLain, Bancroft, Don and Sheryl McLain, Grace, LeOra and Alvin Andersen, Montpellier, Nondus and Max Ostler, Idaho Falls, Carol and Thiel Parker, Bancroft, and Marthell and Jim Fowler, Soda Springs.

Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a brother, Oliver Barfuss, Bancroft.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Murray, Luella Schneider, Edith Butler and Rosa Steadtman; a brother, Leland Barfuss; and a great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 22, at noon at the Bancroft LDS Chapel.

Burial will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Sims Funeral Home.
