Elizabeth Clapham (died 28 June 1902 age 9 years) has a memorial on one of the many 'inscription graves' or 'guinea graves' located in one of the earliest (1844-45) publicly-funded cemeteries in England. These were a type of common grave for a number of unrelated people who died in poverty and were then buried around the same time. Unlike pauper graves, they had headstones commemorating the names of the dead. This type of burial originally cost one guinea (twenty-one shillings), hence the popular name, and saved the family from suffering the indignity of a burial for their loved ones in an unmarked paupers grave.
