"DROWNED. About ten o'oclock Saturday morning [July 14, 1877], three persons were drowned in the Big Sioux River near Portlandville, an old gentleman named [Chauncey Ellis] Crane, MRS. [MARY ARVILLA MAYNARD; daughter of Mr. Chauncey E. Crane], and a seven year old child of Mrs. [Radabaugh].

"The Iowa Liberal" newspaper article transcribed by Cathy Porter-Maynard.
.
NOTE # 1: The original 1877 newspaper article, above, had several errors regarding the identity of the individuals who had drowned, and where the drownings occurred. These errors now are corrected, and are shown, above, in [square brackets].
.
NOTE # 2: Mary Arvilla (Crane) Maynard was the wife of Solomon Maynard.
.
Mr. Chauncey Ellis Crane was the elderly father of Mary (Crane) Maynard, who drowned fording the Big Sioux River. Mr. Crane was also the father of Mrs. Lucia Viola [Crane] Radabaugh, whose young daughter, Viola "Maude" Radabaugh, also drowned that July day in 1877, along with her grandfather and aunt.
.
LOCATION: The article previously stated the drownings occurred near Portlandville. This is not accurate. The drownings occurred two or three miles (as the crow files) North of Crill Mill, along the Big Sioux River. The family was attempting to ford the river, at Bucks Ford, near the homestead of Solomon Maynard.
