William Chappell was the son of Robert and Agnes Chappell. He was born about 1776 in Virginia. His family moved to Wilkes County, GA, about 1788.

William married Margaret Cooper (c.1780-1861), daughter of Enos Cooper, about 1796 near or in Wilkes County.

Records indicate William bought land in Lincoln, Newton, and Walton Counties. He is in the 1830 census at Walton County, and in 1840 at Meriwether County.

On 8 Dec 1842, William recorded a Will. He mentions the following family by name: wife: Margaret; daughter: Mary Ann Amanda Chappell; sons: Henry Park and William; Susannah Lankford's children to have her share; executor [son]: John W. Chappell, and unnamed: "surviving children."
