Later that same day, Johnson went to the drug store to accost Burge who then allegedly assaulted Johnson. Johnson responded, stabbing Burge in the heart with a knife, killing him instantly.
Three justices held an inquiry a few days later, and determined that Johnson had killed Burge in self-defense. Burge's family disagreed, however, and wrote that he was "assassinated" on his headstone.
