This small fieldstone marked "S G" lies next to the grave of Mrs. Hannah Gates who died on 20 March 1744 in her 49th age marks the grave of Susanna Gates who died 25 May 1742 in her 12th year. She was the 5th child of Joseph Gates and Hannah [Brainerd] Gates, born the 24 November 1730 in East Haddam [town record]. The East Haddam First Congregational Church records show that she was baptized on 3 January 1730-1. Her name does not show up again in the records, thus pinpointing the "S G" to that of Susanna Gates who died in 1742.

Next to the grave of Susanna, are three field stones marked "A G". "A G" and "D G", namely Aaron Gates who died 14 August 1740, Ann Gates who died 18 August 1740 and
David Gates who died 12 August 1740, doubtlessly due to the dreaded epidemic called "throat distemper" that swept through New England. All were the children of Joseph Gates and Hannah Gates and were interred in the same row as the parents, thus strongly cementing their relationship.
