Dr. James Curtis Hepburn (Samuel, James, Samuel), born at Milton, Pa., March 13, 1815, son of Samuel and Ann Clay Hepburn, His mother was a daughter of Rev. Slator Clay and Hannah Hughes, widow of John Hughes, of Montgomery County, PA. His grandfather, Slator Clay, was an Episcopal clergyman, rector of the church at Perkiomen and the old Swede church near Norristown. His mother was an earnest Christain, fond of the Bible, exacting a strict observance of the Sabbath in her family, faithful in teaching the Catechism to her children, and inculcating truthfulness and good morals.
