Mrs. L. A. Mackey Called to Her Heavenly Home.
A long and beautiful life on earth is ended.
She came of a family noted for good deeds and was one of this city's early pioneers.
Mrs. Mary Hepburn Mackey, in years past one of the most prominent women of Lock Haven in charitable and religious work, died Tuesday p.m. at 4:45 o'clock at the home of Dr. and Mrs. F. P. Ball, with whom she resided for the past 18 years, of infirmities incident to one of her advanced age. Up until two weeks ago Mrs. Mackey was able to be about the house, but since that time she has been confined to her bed, and gradually grew weaker until she peacefully passed away Tuesday morning.
Deceased was the widow of the late Hon. L. A. Mackey, for many years one of Lock Haven's foremost citizens, who died February 8, 189. As is well known by our older citizens, he was engaged in the banking business, was president of the B.E.V. railroad and represented this district in congress. He was a friend of the poor and delighted to give of his means to ameliorate their sufferings and with the co-operation of his beloved wife who has followed him to the other shore, the necessities of life and good cheer were brought to many homes during winter and especially Christmas time.
Mrs. Mackey's maiden name was Mary Hepburn. She was born at Milton, May 1, 1822, and would therefore have been 85 years of age May 1, of this year. She comes of a distinguished family, who were known for their philanthropy and religious zeal.
Mrs. Mackey had resided in Lock Haven since 1847. Very few of our citizens, indeed, are still living who were here at that early period. Mrs. Mackey was not only one of the oldest residents of the city, but was a member of Great Island Presbyterian church longer than any other member. She was a true Christian woman all her life and in the years gone by devoted much of her time in the Master's cause.
Deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. F. P. Ball and Mrs. J. H. Hayes, and by one brother, Dr. J. C. Hepburn of East Orange, N.J., who for many years was a missionary to Japan, and now at the advanced age of 94 years, is witnessing the grand ? is of the work in the island empire, in which he aided to such large extent.
Many friends and townspeople this afternoon paid a last tribute of respect to the late Mrs. L. A. Mackey, by attending the funeral rites, which were conducted at 2 o'clock at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. F. B. Ball, East Water street, by Great Island Presbyterian church. The casket bearers were Wilson Kistler, Dr. R. B. Watson, Ross W. Barrows, Joseph Grafius, J. B. Lesher, and Sidney D. Furst. Interment was made in Highland cemetery and was private.
