She was next to the youngest of eight children born to Rowan and Edith Allen. The family settled in Athol when she was in the second grade and she remained here throughout her life. She loved bicycling around Athol and Orange and enjoyed the youth groups of the local Baptist church where she met her first husband, David P. Thorp. They had one son; her husband died. She enjoyed crafts, furniture refinishing and knitting and was an avid bowler with the L.S. Starrett league. Edie was an executive secretary at L.S. Starrett Co., worked in several jobs in the school systems of Athol and Orange, was secretary for the Athol building inspector, tutored disabled children and was an office manager for her second husband, Dr. Wayne Miller whom she married in 1984. He died in 2016. Her son survives her.
