He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Cedar Coal Company and Elmer Walker Construction Co. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of VFW Post 3066 of Sissonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Wilson Derrick and Nellie Marie Asbury Derrick; grandparents

He is survived by his wife, Lessie Mae Jones Derrick of Sissonville; children, Judy C. Derrick, Doris J. "Topsy" Burford, Raymond E. Toney, Timothy Lynn Derrick, Donetta Marie Kiser, all of Sissonville, and Cynthia D. Henson of Nitro; sisters, Eunice Maxine Rhodes of Charleston, and Judy Ann Derrick of Nitro; and brother, Ivy B. Derrick of Nitro. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
