He served with the United States Army from 1970 until 1977. He was a resident of Eden for many years and worked in the textile industry. He was the pastor of the Gospel Baptist Church in Mayodan, N.C.
He is survived by his mother, Ovella Tumlinson of Harwood; son, Gus Newton Tumlinson of Houston; sister, Elaine Turner of Harwood; brothers, Thomas Tumlinson of Harwood and Robert Lee Tumlinson of Lolita; and half-brothers, Louis Ray Tumlinson of Gonzales, Billy George Tumlinson of San Antonio and Rufus Lee Tumlinson of Harwood. He was preceded in death by his father and his wife Jerline Thornton Tumlinson.
