Mary E. Hoss, 89, of Champaign died at 2 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 16, 2017) at Heartland Healthcare, Champaign.

Mary Ellen was the daughter of Dr. C.W. and Esther Freehill Christie of Champaign. She was born April 1, 1927, and delivered by her father at Mercy Hospital, Urbana.

At a young age, she participated in various swimming and diving events. She excelled at speedskating and won a state of Illinois senior women's speedskating title while in high school.

She was in the first graduating class at Holy Cross School, Champaign, and graduated from Champaign High School in 1944 and the University of Illinois in 1949. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

She married Albert J. Hoss in 1950 and enjoyed 60 years with him. Together they raised six children. Mary Ellen became involved with the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering thousands of hours, including serving as president of the auxiliary. She also served on the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors.

Mary and Al enjoyed many years with their bridge group. Rumor has it that Mary and her bridge partner, Alice, never lost a match over decades of playing at the club.

However, Mary's greatest accomplishment was her family. Mary Ellen was loved not only by her six children but by all of her children's friends. Her door was always open and it was not unusual to see these friends sitting at the kitchen table and eating PBJs or her special cream cheese and olive sandwiches!

Mary Ellen was nicknamed "Honey" by her first grandchild and soon everyone that knew her called her Honey. Honey enjoyed her grandchildren immensely and spent considerable time with them after school, doing homework and having numerous sleepovers.

Surviving are five sons, Albert C., Timothy (Margie), Charles (Laura), Michael (Judy) and Patrick (Amy); her grandchildren, Jerry Lighty (Amy), Susan Lighty, Tim Hoss Jr. (Kristi), Jeniffer Hoss McClellan (Nic), Mollie Hoss, Sylvia Hoss, Haley Hoss, Mick Hoss, Riley Hoss (Shatosha), Rennick Hoss (Kimi) and Ramsey Hoss and six great-grandchildren.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; two infants, Charles William Christie Jr. and Mary Esther Christie; her daughter, Christie Lighty Malloch (2004); her husband, Albert J. (2009) and her sister, Joanie Moore (2011).
