Joe Evans, the landscape painter, died Saturday night at his home, 102 East Twenty-sixth Street. He was born in this city Oct. 29, 1857, and was the son of the late Dr. Joseph Evans. He first studied art in the National Academy of Design, and then spent three years at the Beaux Arts, in Paris, where he was a pupil of Gérôme. He was one of the original members of the Art Students' League, was elected its President in 1891, and was re-elected twice in succession to that office. He became a member of the Society of American Artists, and was for three years its Secretary, and here he exhibited for many years.
Apart from his profession, Mr. Evans was a public-spirited citizen. In 1896 Mayor Strong appointed him a School Inspector, and reappointed him the following year, but ill-health compelled him to resign. He was a member of the Players Club and the Century Club.
