1870 U.S. Federal Census – NA Film Series 593, Roll 1179, page 340, line 26 (HeritageQuest):
James D. Berry, age 34, occupation, retail dealer in furniture, real estate value $4,000, personal estate value, $3,500; Sarah E., age 33, keeping house; William E., age 14; Delmar, age 11; Frank, age 7; Eugene, age 3; and Edward, age 1; all born in Ohio.
1880 U.S. Federal Census – NA Film #T9-998, Family History Film # 1254998, page 332D, ED26, North Lewisburg, Champaign County, Ohio:
James D. Berry, age 46; Sarah E., age 44; Delmar, age 19; Frank age 17; Eugene, age 13; Edmond, age 10; Jimmy D., age 5; Jane Stoks, age 65 – mother-in-law.
Except for James D., who was listed as the head of household, the above males are listed as sons, and Sarah E. as wife.
Knowing that Delmore (Delmar) Berry was living as a son in the James D. and Sarah E. Berry household, and that Jane Stoks (Stokes) was listed as mother-in-law, helps to explain the reason his inscription appears on the same stone as Jane Stokes; she would have been his grandmother.
