Came over from Germany as a young child, circa 1839, with his mother and brother. His father, Wilhelm Ferdinand Klümper, died in Germany in 1836. His mother, Christina C. Störig Klimper, married John Puttmann in 1840. Henry and his brother Fred were raised in Salt Creek, Indiana but moved to Cincinnati as young men, built their careers and raised their families there.
Henry Joseph Klimper and his family lived above the grocery store he operated at 89 Oregon St. (later Observatory St.) His son Henry Joseph (known as Joseph) joined him as a clerk in 1882. When his father died in 1884, Joseph took over operation of the store, but only for four years, dying in 1888.
