Christina Charlotte Storig was born in Lohn, Niedersachsen, Germany, of parents Johann Friederich Ludwig Storig and Maria Develea Hol. Christina and her first husband, Wilhelm Ferdinand Klümper, married in Germany in 1830 and had two sons: John Frederick Ferdinand (Fred) and Henry Joseph. Wilhelm died in 1836 in Germany.
Christina emigrated to the US in 1839 with her boys and married John Henry Puttmann that same year; they had seven children together. After a few years in the grocery business in Cincinnati, they settled on a farm outside of Enochsburg in Salt Creek township, Decatur County, Indiana.
