Alfred Adams, who died at the county hospital on Friday last, was an early pioneer of Humboldt. He was a member of Co. B, Mountaineer Battalion, Colonel Whipple commanding, and served from 1863 to 1865 during the Indian [sic, Civil] War.

Alfred Adams was born in Van Buren (now Cass) County, Missouri, in 1830. As a young man he headed west to California. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years at Arcata, Humboldt County, on May 21, 1863, and was mustered into Company B, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers. At the time of his enlistment Alfred indicated that he was 30 years old (born 1830). Private Adams was promoted to corporal February 1, 1865. Corporal Adams was mustered out at Camp Curtis (Arcata) May 13, 1865. After the war he remained in Humboldt County. Alfred filed for a Civil War veteran's pension September 11, 1890, and received application No. 893,511 and certificate No. 659,753.
Alfred died in Humboldt County November 20, 1896, and was buried in Myrtle Grove Cemetery. His cemetery records show his age at the time of his death as 63
