Edith Wilson Allen, a resident of Heritage Home in Florence, SC, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Mrs. Allen, 100, was the widow of Ernest Sterling Allen. They were married for sixty-eight years prior to his death in 2005.
She was born in Waxhaw, NC, one of eleven children of Charles Montgomery and Essie Waddell Wilson. A life-long resident of Florence County, she graduated from Tans Bay High School as class valedictorian. She was a loyal and dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Florence for over 60 years. She dearly loved First Baptist and her church family and was active in all areas of the church. She provided outstanding leadership by serving as Sunday School Director, WMU President, and holds the distinction of being the only female elected to serve as a deacon. Mrs. Allen was co-founder of the Poynor Adult Education Center and served as principal for five years. She was active on various PTA boards and received a lifetime award for her service. She also served on the board of directors of the Seaboard Coastline Credit Union. Mrs. Allen was a kind and generous person who gave freely of her time and talents to help others.
