Richard Warrender 1929-2014
POWNAL Richard Warrender passed peacefully on February 5, 2014. Born February 20, 1929, he was the son of James and Edith Warrender, Syracuse, N.Y. He was a 1948 graduate of Solvay High School and then attended Muskingum University, Ohio. Richard, Dickie, Scotty, Cute Dick, Uncle Fudd, Mr. Warrender was known by many names by his many friends. He was a jazz musician who played stand up bass in the Syracuse area for decades. He was an animal lover, starting with a make-believe dog named Cartwright. In his younger days, he was a golfer and loved to jitterbug. He was a member of Robison Memorial United Church, Westvale, and then First Presbyterian Church of Marcellus. He served as a Village Trustee for Marcellus, N.Y. for one year. Professionally, Richard worked primarily as a buyer and salesman in the wholesale food and convenience store industries. Starting as a salesman for Purina, he worked for Dewitt Wholesale Foods, Pickwick and others. Working with friends and colleagues, Mr. Warrender founded the New York Association of Convenience Stores (NYACS) in 1986; he was President Emeritus. Life-long spinal issues resulted in Mr. Warrender becoming a wheel chair user. His lobbying efforts on behalf of NYACS coupled with his first-hand knowledge of disability issues led to his appointment as Governor Pataki's Advocate for People with Disabilities for the State of New York in 1995, a position he held for 10 years. He retired to Vermont and more recently Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Joan Warrender; a sister, Margaret Warrender Stilwell; and brother-in-law. Donald Stilwell. He is survived by son, Kevin Warrender (Kathy Ogden), Pompano Beach, Fla.; daughter, Edith Warrender (Jeff Burrington), Pownal, Vt.; son, Scott Warrender (Magaly Velazquez), Pompano Beach, Fla.; daughter, Tracy Marlatt (Jeff Marlatt), Winchester, Va.; grandchildren, Kathryn Warrender, Eva Grace Warrender, Ian Burrington and Evan Burrington; as well as many nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service for friends and colleagues at the First Presbyterian Church, 1 East Main Street, Marcellus, N.Y., on Friday, May 16, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. followed by a jazz reception in the church's Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marcellus Senior High School music program (to be used for their jazz program) or VNA & Hospice of SVHC.
