Ann Hollis Hankla died January 14, 2017 in Tyler, Texas surrounded by family. She was born June 12, 1932 in McKinney, Texas to William Richard Hollis and Beulah Inez Pinson Hollis.
She married Walter Vernon Hankla, son of Rev. William Lee Hankla and Mrs. Edwina Hurt Hankla, in McKinney,Texas April 3,1953.
She graduated from McKinney High School in 1950, Received a Bachelor of Education from Texas Woman's University in 1954 and a Master in Education from Utah State University in 1975.
Ann is survived by her 4 children and their families.William Lee Hankla (1954), wife Lidija Majnaric Hankla, James Walter (1955), wife Maria Saldivar Hankla Laura Ann Johnston (1956), and Nancy Rebecca (1958), husband Dr. Scott Thomas Satterfield. Eleven Grandchildren, William Lee Hankla (wife Helen), IV, Clinton Mathias Hankla (wife Sarah), Nicole Mary-Ann Serle, Tyler David Serle, Christopher James Hankla (wife Lauren), Sarah Marie Hankla, Matthew Ryan Hankla, Jennifer Leigh Rush (husband Semmie), Cara Lauren Johnston, Jake Thomas Satterfield, Emily Jayne Satterfield. Six Great-grandchildren- Hunter Lee Rush, Morgan Elizabeth Rush, Mikayla Renée Rush, William Brady Hankla, James Austin Hankla, Garrett Mathias Hankla
mostly taught English but also taught Spanish for years. She often worked second jobs, teaching ESL and GED to support and raise 4 kids as a single mom starting in 1971 when her husband, Maj. Walter Vernon Hankla, "Hank" died suddenly in Big Spring, Texas. The family was traveling to Utah State University where she and Hank were working on their Master degrees in Education during the summers. She went on to complete her Masters in Education from Utah State University in 1975.
Ask anybody who knew her well and they would tell you she was one of the sweetest ladies they had ever met. One student recounts how she read "The Tale of Two Cities" aloud in class followed by a project of potato puppets. Her student recalled how much he enjoyed it remarking, "Who does that?" Mrs. Hankla would laugh so hard recounting how one student made a potato puppet of Marie Antoinette that got her head chopped off by a guillotine.
Ann had a beautiful voice. She started singing in church at a young age and she sang in the Presbyterian Church choir for years in Palestine until her mobility started to fail around 10 years ago.She raised her children in the Methodist Church because her father-in-law was a Methodist Minister. However, as soon as Nancy left for college she returned to the Presbyterian Church in Palestine, Texas and was active and an Elder there.
She was an active member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member Delta-Kappa-Gamma, The ACORN Club, The Pioneer Garden Club and Harvey Woman's Club.
Ann was Preceded in death by Husband, Maj. Walter Vernon Hankla, on June 4, 1971. She was a loving mother.
Funeral services for Ann Hollis Hankla 84 of Tyler, will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017, at The First Presbyterian Church, with Father Matt Bowter, The Rev. Ted Welty, and Woody Meredith officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Park.
