Maxine Mathis Joyce, age 95, died at home on December 28. The daughter of Dora Hopkins Mathis and David Martin Mathis, she was born in Wilkes County, NC. She spent her young adult life in Martinsville, VA. where she met her husband Wm. Lester Joyce, Sr. A graduate of Martinsville High School, she worked at her mother's beauty salon until the end of WWII. She shared actively in the running of a 65 acre family farm in Figsboro, VA. In 1952, she and her family moved to Pensacola, FL where she lived for the remainder of her life except for a period of five years when she lived with her daughter Carolyn in Armonk, NY. After the death of her husband, she worked at Tiny Tog's children's shop in the University Mall until her retirement. She was an active member of Heights Baptist Church. A skilled and talented seamstress, Mrs. Joyce was also a marvelous gardener. She spent many hours daily in her vegetable and flower garden and shared her plants with many friends. She was also a multi-talented construction consultant in all phases of her husband's house-building enterprises. Maxine was a cheerful and generous woman with a quick sense of humor. In her last years she especially enjoyed the activities of the Jazz Society of Pensacola and the concerts on the lawn at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church where she attended services. She leaves behind her daughter Carolyn Joyce Tokson of Pensacola, FL, and Carolyn's partner Jeff Elliot, a son, Bill Joyce( Kat) of Chiang Mai,Thailand, four grandchildren: Marilyn Joyce Lavender, Mark Lavender (Grace), Star Joyce Ladd (Bruce) and Laura Maxine Joyce. Her great-grand children are Emily Owens, Kirsti Owens, Kathryn Biehl Russell (Paul), Hollis Presnell, Zack Tokson and Jake Tokson and her great-goddaughter, Maynaa Bailey. She also is survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Lois Caprio and her special friends Kate Rowell, Maxine Blaylock and Marilyn Gless as well as numerous nieces and nephews in NC. A jazz memorial service will take place at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, January 25 at 2 PM. A graveside remembrance at Bayview Memorial Park will be conducted by Rev. Fred Martin of Heights Baptist Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Jazz Society of Pensacola which provided her with such joy in her later years would be appropriate.
