John Slight, An Early Grundy Resident, Is Dead

John Slight, one of the earliest residents of north Grundy, died at his home in Parkersburg on Saturday morning. He died very suddenly from heart failure shortly after he arose for the day. He had been in failing health during the past year, due to an accident, when he fell from a hay loft at his farm about a year ago.

John Slight was born May 17, 1857, in Ogle County, near German Valley, Illinois. His parents were Martin Slight and wife Geeske (nee Jochums). When the boy was about seven years old, in 1864, the family left Illinois and moved to Iowa, settling on a farm in north German township, Grundy County. In 1881 they moved into Pleasant Valley township near Buck Grove. Mr. John Slight later bought a farm east of Buck Grove, which he owned up to the time of his death. He lived there during the longest portion of his active life.

Six years later, 7 Dec 1887, John was married to Johanna Haan, who bore him three children; Martin, who died a few days after birth, George and Ella. Thirty-two years ago, in 1901, he withdrew from the farm and brought his family to Parkersburg, where he has made his home ever since. Eleven years ago, March 1st, 1922, Mr. Slight suffered a severe loss in the death of his wife, whose end came after a long and severe illness. His daughter Ella stayed with him, taking good care of father and home. Again and again, he gave expression of his deep gratitude for her unceasingly consecrated and unselfish service to him.
Surviving relatives are a daughter, Ella Slight, Parkersburg; a son, George, from Waterloo, and a brother Dan from Cedar Falls.
The funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the house. Rev. D. Siemsen, his pastor, preached the sermon in German and Rev. Dr. Geo. Schnucker made an address in English. A duet consisting of Harry Button and Miss Lillian M. Sohner, accompanied by Miss Kopplin, all of Waterloo, sang a number of beautiful hymns. Interment took place in the family plot in the Parkersburg cemetery. Six of Mr. Slight's nephews constituted the pallbearers: Martin, John, Ed, Leslie, Carl and Ralph.
