Jacob Seifert Sr., a highly respected and well known German resident, died at 6:50 this morning at his home, 408 Depeyster street, where he conducted a bakery and grocery store. He had been ailing the last two weeks but had been confined to the bed only a week. He was taken with grip which developed into double pneumonia, the cause of death. Mr. Seifert was born in Germany 65 years ago on March 7 last, and there he learned the trade of a baker, which he followed in the old country. He came to this country 43 years ago and located in New York where he worked at his trade for a year, and then came to this city and Rome had since been his home. He secured a position as baker in the old county home, on the site of the present Rome State Custodial Asylum, holding that position for about twelve years. Being a very industrious man, he made clothespins at night, and the first $25 he got together in this way he made the first payment on a home. When he left his position at the county house he opened a bakery and grocery store on Depeyster street where he also made his home and where he made a success in his business. On May 30 next he would have been married 41 years. His wife was Miss Margaret Wolf of this city, who with the following children survive: Valentine of Utica, Paul of Watertown, Jacob jr, John, William, Grover and Albert Seifert of this city. Mrs. Seifert has been ill for some time. Mr. Seifert was a faithful member of the Trinity German Lutheran Church on S. James street, having served that church as trustee. He also was a member of the German American Band and the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
