George Ward was born on July 10, 1813, in East Heslerton, England, the son of George Ward and Elizabeth Ann (Barker) Ward.

From the Marcus Historical Society centennial book; Marcus, Cherokee County, Iowa; courtesy of Sherree Ogren:

Around age 10, George Ward's family immigrated from Yorkshire, England, to Canada, settling in Toronto-Gore Township, Peel County, Ontario.

Remaining on the family farm, George married Mary Ann (Pickering) Woodill, the widow of William Woodill, in Toronto-Gore Township, on June 7, 1836. They farmed the nearby Woodill farm until 1851, when they moved to Mitchell, Ontario.

In 1871, George, Sr. was the senior member of a 4-unit wagon train that arrived at Marcus, Cherokee County, Iowa, on August 28. George and Ann brought a very large family to Amherst Township. They lived in their wagons until small homes could be erected. George Sr. was a pioneer in Marcus.

Obituary from the Glasco Sun, Glasco, Cloud County, Kansas, April 26, 1884:

Mr. George Ward, Sr., died at his home in Glasco, Kansas, April 22 of pneumonia. He leaves an aged wife and 8 children to mourn his loss.

Born in Yorkshire, England, in 1813, he came to Canada in 1823.

He was married in Toronto, Canada, in 1836.

In 1868, he immigrated to Jackson County, Iowa, with his family, and from there went to Cherokee County, Iowa. From there he came to Pratt County, Kansas, for his wife's health. In the fall of 1880, he came to Glasco, where he made his home until his death.

He was a loving husband and kind father, and was dearly beloved by all who knew him. A great many mourn his loss besides his relatives. He was followed to his last resting place by a great many mourning friends. Yet "they mourn not as those who have no hope," for they all know, if they follow his footsteps, they will meet him again in a land where pain and suffering will never be known. He passed away as peacefully as one falling asleep. It can truthfully be said of him, "Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, from which one never wakes to weep."
